LED lighting for unmanned aircraft
Released:  9/1/2008

Unmanned air vehicle (UAV) utilize light weight, rugged, high reliability LED external lighting from Oxley.

Oxley has designed navigation, wing tip and anti-collision lighting to meet the demanding operational requirements of UAVs. Rugged, lightweight and low profile, the lights use high intensity LED technology to meet FAA lighting requirements.

Operating directly from the 28 Vdc aircraft power, and a weight of only 1lb the anti-collision light is significantly lighter than traditional strobe technology and does not require an additional power supply unit.  The 400 candela white output from the LED unit is designed to replace existing anti-collision technology.

Oxley has secured an order to supply the set of LED external navigation and anti-collision lights to BAE Systems for the UK High Endurance Rapid Technology Insertion (HERTI) UAV.  The fully autonomous HERTI provides a surveillance and reconnaissance capability -the lights are able to support the  harsh operational environments in which they will be deployed. The HERTI was also the first UAVs to have flown in the UK, under Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules.

The lights are configured for Aviation red, white and green as standard. Additional NVIS friendly, covert and specialist configurations are available to meet specialized customer requirements.

Oxley is an established supplier of integrated LED aircraft lighting systems world wide. The lights provide known benefits associated with LEDs including: zero maintenance; low power; high Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) – typically 40,000 hours; and low through-life maintenance costs.
